Beam
is thehorizontal structural member in a
building used for bearing loads. It is typically used for resisting vertical
loads, shear forces and bending moments. The structural member which resists
the forces laterally or transversely applied to the axis is also called beam.
There are various types of beams
based on mainly three categories.The
list of beam according to its categorized Is discussed below :
1.Based on the Type of support :
(i)Simply supported beam
(ii)Cantilever beam
(iii)Overhanging beam
(iv)Fixed beam
(v)Continuous beam
(vi)Propped Cantilever Beam
They all are explained below with the pictures.
simply supported beam
(i)Simply Supported Beam
Beam which is supported or resting
freely on supports at its both ends is known as simply supported beam.
Cantilever beam
(ii)Cantilever Beam
A beam which is fixed at one end
and free at the other end is known as cantilever beam.
(iii)Overhanging Beam
overhanging beam
It the end portion of the beam is
extended beyond the support such a beam is known as overhanging beam.
(iv)Fixed Beam
fixed beam
A beam whose both ends are fixed
or built in walls, is known as fixed beam.
Continuous Beam
(v)Continuous Beams
A beam which is provided more than
two supports or is continuous over more than two support is known continuous
beam.
propped cantilever beam
(vi)Propped Cantilever Beam
A propped cantilever beam is a little modification
beam, if the free end of the cantilever beam is place on a roller support than
the beam will be propped cantilever beam.
2.According to cross section
(i) I-Beam : The shape of the beam is a bit
like I. So it is called I-Beam.
I-beam
(ii) T-Beam : The shape of the beam is a bit
like T. So it is called T-Beam.
T-beam
(iii) C-Beam : The shape of the beam is a bit
like C. So it is called C-Beam.
