is bearing capacity of the soil?

bearing capacity of soil
Bearing capacity of the soil is the capacity of the soil to support the loads applied to the ground. The bearing capacity of the soil is the maximum average contact pressure between the foundation and the soil which should not produce shear failure in the soil.

If sometime when you build any  structure and if the foundation of the that structure goes down or any other problems happens with the that then that means the bearing capacity of the soil is lesser than that load or the amount of load we are applying to that specific area of the soil and it is also termed or regarded as failure of shear or bearing capacity failure.

So if we want to build the structure over that specific area then we have to increase the bearing capacity of that specific area to build that structure. So to increase bearing capacity there are various method and all of them are described below.

How to improve or increase the bearing capacity of the soil?

The Methods of improving or increasing the bearing capacity of the soil is described below in brief and in simple words.

1. Increasing the Foundation Depth

This is the simplest and perfect method of increasing the bearing capacity of the soil. Increasing the depth of the foundation is the simplest method for improving the bearing capacity of soil. Because soil has a high pressure at the deeper depth. Hence it will be more compacted because there are very less number of pores ( the air between two soil molecules).

2. Draining the Subsoil

This is the another well known and perfect method of increasing the bearing capacity of the soil. Drainage is the another well known method which improves the bearing capacity if soil. In this process drains are placed near the footing base, then the subsoil water is collected and drained out by a pipe. The water of the soil is passed out through the pipe in the drainage and the moisture of the soil is destroyed.

3. Bending Granular materials

This is the simplest method of increasing the bearing capacity of the soil. In this method the certain amount of granular materials such as sand, gravel, crushed stone, etc is blended into the weak soil by ramming. Hence the poor soil becomes much stronger and bearing capacity of the soil is improved.

4. Confining the soil

This method actually helps in the place where there is sandy soil and is alos termed as the simplest method  for the improving the bearing capacity of the soil. In this method the soil is confined in a bounded area with the help of sheet piles. This method is suitable for sandy soils.

5. Driving sand piles

This method is another easy method which help to improve the bearing capacity of the soil. This method is also helpful to improve the bearing capacity if soft soil by reducing the void volume. Here wooden piles are used to make holes in the weak solids and then sand is filed into the holes by ramming.
