Cement
Test on Construction Site
In the construction site there are no laboratory to test
the quality of cement but we have to test cement for field work. The quality check is performed with the help of some basic field tests.
Although these tests are not very accurate, they provide some idea about the
Quality of the cement.
What
are the tests of cement?
-These following are the quality of cement test at
construction site (Field Test):
- Packing
Date
- Test
of Cement Color
- Presence of
lumps
- Adulteration
test
- Temperature
test
- Float
tests
- Strength
test
- Setting
test
Manufactured/
Packing Date
First
we check the cement manufactured date if it crosses 90 days from the
manufacturing date than it is no need to perform another test because strength
of cement reduces with time, so it is important to check the manufacturing date
of the cement. Generally, the cement should be used before 90 days from the date
of manufacturing.
Test
of Cement Color
It should be grey color
with a light greenish shade. The color of the cement should be uniform.
Presence of Lumps
Open the bag and take a check the cement, there should not be any visible
lumps. Thrust your hand into the cement bag, there should not be any lumps
inside. The cement
should be free from any hard lumps. Such lumps are formed by the absorption of
moisture from the atmosphere. Any bag of cement containing such lumps should be
rejected.
Cement Adulteration Test
When cement touched or rubbed in between fingers it should
feel smooth, if it felt rough, it indicates adulteration with sand.
Temperature Test of
Cement
Hand plugged in to cement bag it should feel cold inside the
cement bag, if it feels warm than we may assume that hydration is going on.
Float Test
Take a small quantity sample of cement is
thrown in a bucket of water, the particles should float for some time before it
sinks.
Setting Test
A thick paste of cement with water is made on a piece of
glass plate and it is kept under water for 24 hours. It should set and not
crack.
Strength of Cement Test
A block of cement 25 mm ×25 mm and 200 mm
long is prepared and it is immersed for 3 days in water. It is then placed on
supports 150 mm apart and it is loaded with a weight of about 30 kg. The block
should not show signs of failure.
The briquettes of a
lean mortar (1:6) are made. The size of briquette may be about 75 mm ×25 mm ×12
mm. They are immersed in water for a period of 3 days after drying. If cement
is of sound quality such briquettes will not be broken easily.
What
are the tests of cement? In Laboratory Test
But we have a laboratory
for cement test than following these test are done for check the quality of cement:
-
1. Fineness Test
2. Consistency Test
3. Setting Time Test
4. Strength Test
5. Soundness Test
6. Heat of Hydration Test
7. Tensile Strength Test
8. Chemical Composition Test
What is the Purpose of cement test?
We all know that cement is a basic material for a construction,
then it is necessary that it should have own certain properties. This is
basically to know the quality of the cement. This can be achieved by the test
like color test, presence of lumps, setting time, float test, adulteration
test, temperature test etc., Cement is a binding material which bind aggregate,
sand etc., so that we have to check its binding capacity by checking the
quality test of cement.
